Jay E. Hoy
Would Help Anyone -
Jay E. Hoy, age 82, of Carlisle, departed for the eternal hunting grounds while being comforted by the love of his wife on Tuesday, May 3, 2016. Jay was born on Monday, March 5, 1934 in Mechanicsburg, PA, to the late Nevin Bruce Hoy and Florence Catherine (Wagner) Hoy. In addition to his parents, Jay is preceded in death by his three brothers: Norman, Paul, and Glenn Hoy; and his sister, Ivy Moyer.
Jay’s survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Marilyn Marie (Allison) Hoy; his two daughters: Tina Marie Allison of Harrisburg, Tammy Kaye Hoy McClure and her husband, Michael, of Middletown; his three granddaughters: Jessica Hughes, Jennifer Bucher, Amanda Brackbill; his nine great-grandchildren: Mason, Ragen, Addison, Connor, Lane, Quintyn, Esther, Kloey, Clayton; his four siblings: George Hoy, Arleen Hoy, Emma Whitcomb, Gladys Peck; his doggy companion, Cooper; several nieces and nephews; and many many friends.
Jay was born and raised in Mechanicsburg until he served in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1957. During the Korean War, he sailed on the USS Coral Sea, USS Forrestal, and USS Bennington. Jay worked at Weber’s Hardware in Mechanicsburg where he installed insulation and repaired lawn mowers. He was the owner and operator of Hoy’s Saw Mill and he retired from AMP Inc.’s Pike Plant in Carlisle, after 43 years of service. Jay was a life member of the AMA Motorcycle Association, National Wild Turkey Federation, VFW South Mountain Post 6771, Bonny Brook Riding Club, Carlisle Fish & Game Association, Williams Grove Steam Engine Association, National Rifle Association, and American Legion Post #26. He loved hunting, camping, and racing. Jay enjoyed cooking for a racecar crew and he made the newspaper one time for drag racing in Carlisle; his family laughs recalling that Jay never would have been caught if he had not dropped the drive shaft. Jay had an affinity for anything and everything sweet with some of his favorites being: apple dumplings, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and ice cream which he kept in his many and varied ice cream freezers. His favorite ice cream was homemade grape nut pecan. Jay was hard to surprise and no one could pull a fast one on him. Although he was headstrong, Jay was known for helping anyone in need, and he will be missed dearly.
All are welcome to join Jay’s family at his graveside service, where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard, on Monday, May 9, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, 1921 Ritner Highway, Carlisle, PA 17013.
