Jean M. Bruce, 87, of Mechanicsburg, passed away at Bethany Village on November 13, 2014. Jean was born on March 16, 1927, grew up in Shepherdstown and attended a one-room school. She was a member of the class of 1946 from Mechanicsburg High School and enjoyed their class reunions. Jean was a life-long resident of Mechanicsburg and was the daughter of the late Mabel and Earl Barbour. She was married for 62 years to Herman P. Bruce who died in 2008. Jean is preceded in death by her siblings: Doris (Betty) O’Rourke, Earl Barbour, Jr., and Don Barbour.

Jean was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and was actively involved in two church groups. She was also the “card lady” for 20 years sending sympathy and get well cards to parishioners. For more than 45 years, Jean volunteered in the Mechanicsburg community helping with Meals on Wheels, New Hope Ministries and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 109 where she was the sergeant at arms.

Jean is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Kennedy, wife of David and their children, Adam and Alissa of Mays Landing, NJ; a daughter, Carole Bruce and her daughter, Amy of Mechanicsburg; and a son, Cameron Bruce and his wife, Karen and their children, Sergei of Enola and Vlad currently in Army boot camp.

Jean’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Bethany Village, Colonial Heights, for providing love, kindness, patience, care and comfort for Jean.

All are welcome to join Jean’s family at her visitation on Saturday, November 22, 2014, from 1:30 p.m. until time of service at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, 117 West Keller Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Pastor Randall J. Marburger officiating.  The urn will be placed in the church columbarium immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jean's name may be made to her church, St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 117 West Keller Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; Mechanicsburg Area High School Alumni Association, P.O. Box 312, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; or Bethany Village Care Assurance Fund, 325 Wesley Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
