Jean Elizabeth (Ohmit) Walmer
With Her Husband -
Jean Elizabeth (Ohmit) Walmer, 88 of Mechanicsburg died at the Oaks Skilled Care Center at Bethany Village on Saturday, April 7, 2012. An only child, she was born at Harrisburg Hospital on Thursday, March 27, 1924, daughter of the late Charles Vernon and Marian Evelyn (George) Ohmit. Jean was the loving and devoted wife of James Henry Walmer, who preceded her in death by four days. They were married on November 9, 1946 and celebrated their 65th Anniversary last fall.
Jean graduated from Steelton High School as part of the class of 1942. She was a lifetime member of First Methodist Church that in the 1990’s merged with Centenary United Methodist Church , both in Steelton. Before marriage, Jean was a secretary for both Pennsylvania State Liquor Control Board and Olmstead Air Force Base where she worked 12 hour shifts during WWII. For 30 years, Jean was the secretary in her husband’s State Farm Agency , retiring together on July 31, 1982.
Jean was a former member of the Eastern Star of Steelton Area and Wednesday Club of Harrisburg where she sang alto. She was a long-time member of Highspire Historical Society . Jean was also a member of her church choir for many years and in recent years she enjoyed painting ceramics and giving them as gifts.
Jean’s survivors, who she dearly loved, include her son: James O. Walmer and his wife Martha of Harrisburg; her daughter: Rev. Dr. Verna Call and her husband Thomas of Renfrew; three grandchildren: Brian Walmer, David Call, Brenda McGuire; and six great-grandchildren: Anthony, Albert, William, Kaitlyn, Riley, and Isaia.
All are welcome to join Jean’s family at her viewing on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, from 12:30 until time of service at 1:30 at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA, 17055, with Rev. Dr. Verna Call and Rev. Anne Flynn officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Churchville Cemetery , Steelton. Honored to be pallbearers are: James O. Walmer, Thomas Call, David Call and Scott McGuire.
