Jerry Lewis Johnson, 80, of Mechanicsburg and formerly of Shiremanstown died at home and surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, May 6, 2012. He was born in Harrisburg on Monday, January 4, 1932, son of the late Lewis Ralph Johnson and Ruth Mabel (Updegraff) Johnson. Jerry was the husband of Mary (Swineford) Johnson who he married on May 4, 1991. They just celebrated their 21 year anniversary. Jerry was also the widower of Betty Lou (Bostwick) Johnson who died on June 23, 1988 after 34 years of marriage.
Jerry retired in 1992 from IBM in Mechanicsburg after 27 years of service working as a business analyst. He was a member of Silver Spring Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsburg and an Air Force Veteran . Jerry was a dedicated firefighter who began his 60+ years of service as a teenager with Rescue Fire Company in Harrisburg. He then became an active member of Shiremanstown Fire Company and then Hampden Township Fire Department . Jerry was a “nut” for Drum Corps. He played his soprano trumpet in the Westshoremen Drum Corps in the 60s and 70s. Jerry enjoyed his silence and was a strong willed and determined man. He did a lot of wood working which brought him a great deal of pleasure. Jerry thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren, who he loved with all is heart.
Jerry’s survivors include his loving wife of 21 years: Mary (Swineford) Johnson; his daughter: Debra Ann Cassatt and her husband Alan of Carlisle; his son: David Lee Johnson of New Cumberland; his granddaughter: Deanna M. Diller of Dillsburg; two grandsons: Anthony R. Diller of Dillsburg, Ian D. Johnson of Mechanicsburg; his brother: Lee Johnson of Florida; four step-sons: Craig, Keith, Brian all of North Carolina and Rick of Ohio; three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
All are welcome to join Jerry’s family at his visitation on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, from 9:00 until time of service at 10:30 at Silver Spring Presbyterian Church , 444 Silver Spring Road, Mechanicsburg, PA, 17050, with Reverend Donald Steele officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Rolling Green Memorial Park in Camp Hill. Jerry’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at his church following the burial.
