Joel Hanson Millar, age 89, of Carlisle, and formerly of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2022.  Joel was born on Monday, November 28, 1932, in New Oxford to the late Peter J. Millar and Beulah Naomi (Boose) Millar.  Joel was the widower of Waltraud “Fips” L.E. (Hemberger) Millar, who passed away on February 7, 1981.  In addition to his parents and wife, Joel is preceded in death by his brother, William Wood Millar.

Joel’s survivors include his two sons: Jeffrey “Jeff” Alan Millar and fiancé, Jodi Diego, of Boiling Springs, Chris “Chrissy” Noel Millar and significant other, Wendy Harkins, of Mechanicsburg; his three grandchildren: Jason Millar, Brittany Millar and Noah Millar; his precious great-granddaughter, Amelia Millar; his two brothers: James Millar and wife, Glenda, of Abbottstown and Fred Millar of Orange, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

Joel graduated from New Oxford High School as part of the class of 1950 and attended Gettysburg College.  He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 until 1956.  In 1998, Joel retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Camp Hill, after many years of service working as a mail carrier and as the Union Shop Steward.  Joel was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dillsburg, American Legion Post 109 in Mechanicsburg, VFW Post 6771, and American Legion Post 26, both in Dillsburg.  Although he never played tennis, Joel loved to watch tennis on television; and looked forward to his trips, each year, to the U.S. Open Tennis Championships with Jeff and Chris.  Joel was a collector of Hess trucks, hats and hat pins, and many other items that caught his eye.  Over the years, Joel traveled all over the country.  He especially liked to spend time at the beach.  After work, Joel could often be found at the Countryside or the Cold Spring Inn, having a “cold one”, telling stories, chatting with friends, playing ping pong and shooting darts.  Joel had a passion for poker and enjoyed playing in two card groups each week.  Joel will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

All are welcome to join Joel’s family at his celebration of life open house and gathering of family and friends on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a time of remembrance at 2:30 p.m. at Buhrig’s Gathering Place, 25 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, (717) 766-3421 (next to Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory); and his virtual gathering of family and friends and service via video chat or telephone beginning at 2:15 p.m. with Chaplain Jacqueline Cook officiating.  Over 100 parking spaces are available; just look for the “Buhrig” parking signs in all of the parking lots.  Interment will be in the New Oxford Cemetery in New Oxford. Cremation was private.
