John “Big John” Matthew Long

Gentle Giant -

John “Big John” Matthew Long, 46, died at Holy Spirit Hospital on Wednesday, November 6 2013. He was born in Camp Hill, on Monday, February 27, 1967, son of the John Franklin Long and Vera Ann (Potts) Long.  John was the husband of Sandra Kay (Hair) Long whom he married on October 25, 1986.

John’s survivors include his loving wife of 27 years, Sandra, his children, Eugene Russell Long and his wife Saralynn, Kayce Marie Heck and her husband Jake; his grandchildren, Braedyn, Devlyn, Tauryn, Ashlyn; and his parents, John and Vera.

John graduated from Cumberland Valley High School as part of the class of 1985.  He was an employee of Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation in Carlisle with 23 years of service working in maintenance and also at the New Kingstown Deli . John formerly worked at Hempt Farms in Mechanicsburg. He was a member of  the Mechanicsburg Club and the Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association .  John loved to fix things and built and sold bicycles at the Silver Spring Flea Market . He enjoyed cars and was especially fond of his 1973 four door NOVA. John loved hunting and spending time on Raystown Lake. He was a compassionate, funny, genuine “Superman” who enjoyed making people laugh.

All are welcome to join John’s family at his viewing on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, from 9:30 until time of service at 11:30 at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with Pastor Joseph L. Kugle officiating.  Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Churchtown.

John’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Trinity United Methodist Church , 4 West Main Street, New Kingstown following the burial.
