John Lee Neimer

A Wonderful Husband, Father, Friend, & Neighbor -

John Lee Neimer, age 74, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Lancaster, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Friday, February 18, 2022.  John was born on Friday, November 14, 1947, in Lancaster to the late James H. Neimer and Aileen (Duane) Neimer.  In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his brother, James D. Neimer.

John’s survivors include his wife of 27 years, Joanne (Pavilonis) Neimer; his daughter, Madison Leigh Neimer of Washington, D.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

John graduated from McCaskey High School in Lancaster as part of the class of 1965.  He worked as a service manager for 30 years at the Volkswagen dealership in Carlisle as well as Cumberland Valley Motors (CVM) Volkswagen for many years.  John then worked for Penn Detroit Diesel in York Haven for nearly 10 years as a warranty processor.  Most recently, he was employed part-time at Lowe’s Home Improvement in Mechanicsburg for the past five years within the lawn and garden department.  John was a longtime member of Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church, where he served on the Session and helped with property maintenance.

John’s favorite sport to play was tennis.  He served as captain on a local United States Tennis Association (USTA) team that advanced to nationals twice and finished in second place each time.  Starting from a young age, John was quite a baseball fanatic.  He collected trading cards, autographed baseballs, and always had an endless variety of facts and statistics to share.  John had a great interest in astronomy and archeology.  He loved studying the night sky through one of his various telescopes.  As an avid stargazer, John always knew the celestial schedule and never missed a chance to remind his friends and family of the next event in the hopes they would share in the same fascination as he.

The outdoors were essentially John’s favorite place to be and that’s where some of his favorite hobbies found him.  He enjoyed going backpacking, kayaking, and fly fishing.  Two of John’s greatest accomplishments were climbing both Mt. Rainier and Mt. Washington.  He also loved just being in his own backyard gardening and watching it grow from seed to plant.  John made sure the birds were fed and happy, particularly the hummingbirds.  He never left them without plenty of his homemade sugar water.  Above all else, John was a loving husband and father, wonderful friend, and a great neighbor; his presence is going to be truly missed by all those that knew him.

All are welcome to join John’s family at his gathering of family and friends on Saturday, March 5, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. with a memorial service beginning at 12:00 p.m., all at Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church, 300 East Simpson Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; and for his virtual greeting of family and friends via video chat or telephone beginning at 11:45 a.m.; with The Reverend Kathryn Z. Johnston and The Reverend Mark A. Allio officiating.  Masks are welcome, but not required.  A virtual, live-streaming of the service will begin at 12:00 p.m. on www.mechpresby.org .  John’s family invites everyone to join them for a reception with a time of sharing at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service.  Over 100 parking spaces are available; just look for the “Buhrig” parking signs in all of our parking lots.  Cremation was private.
