John Joseph Toland
John Joseph Toland, age 76, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Philadelphia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 30, 2018. John was born on Wednesday, July 15, 1942 in Philadelphia to the late John Vincent Toland and Catherine (Hamburg) Toland. In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his son, John “Jack” Stanley Toland.
John’s survivors include his daughter, Kristi Joan Overton and her husband, Tom, of Bensalem; his sister, Kathleen Kowal and her husband, Mike, of Brigantine, NJ; and several nieces and nephews.
John graduated from North Catholic High School as part of the class of 1960. He proudly served his county in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Boxer from 1961 until 1963. John later retired from the Philadelphia Fire Department, Engine 14, in Philadelphia, after many years of service working as a firefighter. He was a member of VFW Memorial Post 6704, in Mechanicsburg. His family fondly remembers his love of animals and his willingness to lend a hand. John could be found hunting and fishing on his mountain property and cruising the lakes and streams in his kayak. John was so handy that he could fix just about anything.
John’s family will be celebrating his life privately. Cremation was private.
