Jose Luis Barrios, Sr.
Jose Luis Barrios, Sr., age 84, of Carlisle, died at Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home on Saturday, July 1, 2023. Jose was born on Monday, July 18, 1938, in Candelaria, Atlantico, Colombia, South America to the late Luis Ramon Barrios Bonet and Ana Mercedes Barrios Montenegro. In addition to his parents, Jose is preceded in death by his brother, Castulo Barrios Montenegro, and his two sisters: Ana Isabel “Male” Barrios Montenegro and Yomaira Barrios Montenegro.
Jose’s survivors include his son, Jose Luis Barrios, Jr., of Washington DC; his two daughters: Marisol Barrios-Moyer and her husband, David Moyer, of Mechanicsburg; Lucia Barrios Nader of Colombia, South America; and his former spouse and friend, Adoracion Holland of Centre Hall.
Jose was an entrepreneur and restaurateur. He owned businesses including a high-end clothing boutique, a landscaping company, antiques, and real estate. He was an accomplished chef and manager, and worked as the General Restaurant Manager of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. In his younger years and prior to coming to the United States, Jose managed the family ranch business in Colombia and proudly owned many herds of cattle. He was a man of many talents with a strong work ethic.
Jose loved doing home improvement projects himself and was entirely self-taught. He enjoyed container gardening and was proud of his tomatoes and cacti. His entire life, Jose surrounded himself with animals and he was especially fond of his many loyal dogs. Above all, his greatest passion was his family who he deeply loved.
All are welcome to join Jose’s family at his in-person viewing on Saturday, July 8, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. Eastern time until 5:00 p.m. and his service beginning at 5:15 p.m. Eastern time, all at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Jose’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a tribute donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.
