Josephine “Jo” (Rock) Nye
Josephine “Jo” (Rock) Nye, age 94, of Mechanicsburg, died peacefully at home and surrounded by her loving family on Friday, June 16, 2023. Jo was born on Thursday, December 13, 1928, in Chambersburg to the late Clarence Herbert Rock and Ruth Viola (McCans) Rock. Jo was the widow of Ronald “Ron” E. Nye, whom she married on November 18, 1980 and who died on March 10, 2003. In addition to her parents and husband, Jo is preceded in death by her grandson, Jesse Yeakle; her great-grandson, Kiran Yeakle; two brothers; and four sisters.
Jo’s survivors include her three sons: Timothy “Tim” Yeakle and his wife, Jean, of Shiremanstown; Christopher “Chris” Yeakle of Grove City; Scott Yeakle and his wife, Jayanna, of Middletown; a stepson: Michael Nye and his wife, Jenai, of Etters; two stepdaughters: Ruth Carrera and her husband, Robert, of Enola; Kathleen Kitzig and her husband, Charlie, of North Wales; her ten grandchildren; and her five great-grandchildren.
Jo was part of the Chambersburg Area High School class of 1947. She was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg. Jo was short in stature but strong in character. She was the kind of person who, when asked for her opinion, always made her thoughts known. Her daughters-in-law smile as they fondly remember Jo as an excellent mother-in-law, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed being with family and friends and rarely declined an invitation. One of her favorite events was the annual family trip to Sandbridge Beach, Virginia.
Jo may be best remembered for her love of golf, which spanned over 4 decades. She began golfing in earnest in her early 50s and was still playing at the age of 92. Jo was a proud 35-year member of two golf leagues, Armitage and Valley Green. She was always an active person and someone who enjoyed athletics. For years, Jo played tennis and she greatly enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events. Her love of reading came in handy, as she seemed to be on every solicitation list ever created.
A kind person, Jo was always willing to chauffer her friends to their medical appointments, social functions and church, an act of service she practiced until she was 93. What her passengers may not have known is that in Jo’s youth she yearned to be a race car driver. When “caught” by her sons driving at high speeds Jo would explain that she was just “blowing the carbon out of the carburetor”. As a young person during World War II she remembered working in a local cleaners where she washed the uniforms of the captured German Prisoners of War who were being housed in Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg. Jo lived a long and happy life, bringing love and joy into the lives of those who knew her. She will be remembered and missed.
