Joseph “Joe” Edward Mickiewicz
Passionate Penn State Alum -
Joseph “Joe” Edward Mickiewicz, age 58, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Nanticoke, passed away at home on Tuesday, February 11, 2020. Joe was born on Tuesday, August 22, 1961 in Nanticoke to the late Joseph Daniel Mickiewicz and Mary (Yatsko) Mickiewicz. In addition to his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Kwak; and his brother, Daniel Mickiewicz.
Joe’s survivors include his two daughters: Dr. Jerica Gee and her husband, Stanley, of Richmond, VA, Valerie Mickiewicz and her husband, Jason Niemeyer, of Ellicott City, MD; his sister, Maria Lewis and her husband, David, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joe was born and raised in Nanticoke, PA. He graduated from Nanticoke High School in 1979 and Pennsylvania State University in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Joe worked as an internal auditor for 29 years, ending his career with the USDA Office of Inspector General.
He was a passionate Penn State alum who never missed a football game or a chance to showcase his school pride. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf and pool, or could often be found reading science fiction novels and watching the History Channel. He was an active member at the American Legion Post 109 in Mechanicsburg where he will be missed dearly by his friends.
All are welcome to join Joe’s family at his open house with food and fellowship on Saturday, February 22, 2020, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a time of remembrance at 3:00 p.m., all at Buhrig’s Gathering Place, 25 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, (717) 766-3421 (next to Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory); with Celebrant Patti Vogl officiating. Over 100 parking spaces are available; just look for the “Buhrig” parking signs in all of the parking lots.
To honor Joe’s commitment to health and education, his body has been donated to Pennsylvania Humanity Gifts Registry.
