Joyce Adora (Shunk) Briner
The Glue That Held Her Family Together -
Joyce Adora (Shunk) Briner, age 92, of Mechanicsburg, was embraced by her Lord and Savior as she entered into Heaven on Saturday, August 8, 2020. Joyce was born on Friday, March 9, 1928, in Camp Hill to the late George Rawn Shunk and Reba Violet (Stahl) Shunk. Joyce was the widow of Miles “Babe” Gifford Briner, whom she married on April 20, 1947, and who died on August 9, 1997. In addition to her parents and husband, Joyce is preceded in death by her daughter, Marilyn Kay (Briner) Schreffler; her two granddaughters: Kelly Marie (Briner) Umstead and Lisa E. Briner; her two brothers; and her sister.
Joyce’s survivors include her four children: Gifford “Giff” Briner and wife Kathy of Mechanicsburg, Jane Price and husband George of Carlisle, John Briner and wife Sally of Mechanicsburg, Robert “Bob” Briner of Carlisle; her son-in-law, Darryl Schreffler of Mechanicsburg; her 11 grandchildren; her 19 great-grandchildren; her three brothers and six sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
The second Saturday in August was the date of the Blain picnic, which was a huge family reunion for the Briner family for decades. In 1997, Joyce’s husband died on that second Saturday in August; and 23 years later, Joyce reunited with her husband in heaven on the second Saturday in August. For over 25 years, Joyce performed an unbelievable amount of daily work. While raising five young children, keeping a comfortable home, and cooking scrumptious meals; Joyce ran the family’s eight-unit motel, grocery store, and gas station. As a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in New Kingstown for over 60 years, Joyce served on the administrative board for 47 years, and gave her time to various groups and positions of service in the church. One of her favorite activities was stamping and crafting greeting cards for any occasion, and many received Joyce’s special creations. Joyce was an amazing cook and baker. She made the best potato salad in the state, and it was extra delicious when paired with a ham sandwich. Her children remember the family gathering at home every Christmas Eve after candlelight church services, eating Joyce’s homemade black walnut cake, and exchanging gifts. Everyone received a gift . . . everyone. Joyce was the glue that held her family together, and her family cherishes their memories of Joyce.
