Avid Athlete and Outdoorsman -

Kenneth “Ken” Eugene March, age 85, of Carlisle, and formerly of Mechanicsburg, passed away peacefully at UPMC Carlisle Hospital and surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, December 3, 2020.  Ken was born on Friday, April 26, 1935, in Bendersville, PA to the late Dale George March and Myrtle (Stover) March.  Ken was the widower of Judith Marlene (Zimmerman) March, whom he married on December 18, 1967, and who died on November 13, 2014.  In addition to his parents and wife, Ken is preceded in death by all his brothers and sisters.

Ken graduated from Eichelberger High School in Hanover, PA, as part of the class of 1953.  After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and served as a tank crewmember during the Korean War.  Ken achieved the rank of corporal and remained in service of his country in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.  He retired from Rite Aid Corporation in Mechanicsburg, after over 30 years of service working as a truck driver.  Ken was a member of AMVETS of Carlisle, American Legion South Mountain Post 674 in Mt. Holly Springs, Carlisle Elks Lodge 578, and the Mechanicsburg Club, as well as past president and longtime member of the Monroe Fire Company.  Ken was an outstanding, all-around athlete.  As the starting center for Eichelberger High’s football team Ken earned the nickname “Mule”.  He went on to play semi-pro football for the Chambersburg Cardinals and became a golden gloves boxer.  Ken was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing whenever he could.  His children fondly remember Ken as a professional coffee drinker who appreciated a good coffee can.  Known for his red sneakers and striking up conversations with anyone, Ken will be dearly missed by all those whose lives he touched.
