Lawrence “Larry” Quail Hutchins
Devoted and Beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather
Lawrence “Larry” Quail Hutchins, age 83, of Mechanicsburg , and formerly of Knoxville, PA and Portville, NY, died peacefully and surrounded by his loving family at West Shore Hospital on Friday, October 23, 2015. Larry was born on Thursday, July 7, 1932 in Baltimore, MD to the late Herbert McCall Hutchins and Mary Louise (Lewis) Hutchins. In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his brother, Charles Hutchins.
Larry’s survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Ruth (Weer) Hutchins; his three daughters and eight grandchildren: Joy Q. Jannotti and her husband, Jim, and their daughters, Kristin and Amy, of Pottstown, PA, Mimi Shea and her husband, Kieran, and their children, Taylor and Caeley, of Severna Park, MD, Laurie H. Walter and her husband, Mark, and their children, Joshua, Rachel, Alex, and Jacob, of Spotsylvania, VA.
Larry proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and later graduated from Towson State Teachers College in 1959. He retired from New York State Education Association in 1990 after 20 years of service working as a union representative; and prior to that, Larry taught history and geography. He was an active former state board member of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and a member of Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsburg. Larry was a long-time staff member, former director, lifetime supporter, and alumni association founder of Camp Arrowhead in Lewes, DE; where he met his bride in 1957 while she was a nurse and he was the dining director. During his residence at Messiah Village , he was an active volunteer. Some of Larry’s favorite pastimes included enjoying ice cream and chocolate chip cookies, playing bridge, and woodworking. Combining his passion for woodworking and his love for the woods, Larry built his own home in the woods of Tioga County. More than anything, Larry was always supportive of his girls and he loved his grandchildren dearly.
All are welcome to join Larry’s family at his memorial service with military honors on Friday, November 6, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Messiah Village Chapel , 100 Mt. Allen Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend Kathryn Z. Johnston and Reverend Richard L. Long officiating. Larry’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at the Messiah Village Commons Community Room community room immediately following the service. Cremation and scattering will be private and at the family’s convenience.
