Lloyd Woodrow Sheaffer
Loved to Grow Things -
Lloyd Woodrow Sheaffer, age 93, of New Bloomfield, and formerly of Shermans Dale, joined his wife in Heaven peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, November 24, 2017. Lloyd was born on Saturday, March 22, 1924 in Duncannon to the late John Dewey Earl Sheaffer and Alma Miriam (Hostetter) Sheaffer. Lloyd was the widower of Minnie Elizabeth (Vogelsong) Sheaffer, whom he married on May 16, 1948, and who died on January 26, 2012. In addition to his parents and wife, Lloyd is preceded in death by his son, Clifford W. Sheaffer; and his two brothers: Lynn Sheaffer and Robert Sheaffer.
Lloyd’s survivors include his six children: Connie Kretzing and her husband, John, of Newport, Loretta Miley and her husband, Ron, of Shermans Dale, Gail Shull and her husband, John, of Shermans Dale, Barry Sheaffer and his wife, Leahann, of Shermans Dale, Paul Sheaffer and his wife, Georgia, of Shermans Dale, Penny Reisinger and her husband, Ron, of New Bloomfield; his 16 grandchildren; his 27 great-grandchildren; his three great great-grandchildren; his two sisters: Fay Scott of Mechanicsburg, Joyce Smiley and her husband, Lester, of New Bloomfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Lloyd graduated from Duncannon High School as part of the class of 1942. He retired from H.B. Alexander, after 35 years of service working as a construction laborer. Lloyd was a member of LIUNA (Laborers’ International Union of North America) Local Union #1180 in Harrisburg. Lloyd was an extremely hard worker who had a love for growing things, which he always did big time. From white potatoes, sweet potatoes, and pumpkins, to his huge garden of beans, tomatoes, and other vegetables, there was no shortage of anything. Lloyd and his wife, Minnie, would consistently work together in their acres of gardens and had a knack for growing things. The two would spend weeks gathering black walnuts that they would hull out; Minnie was the picker and Lloyd did the cracking, which left his hands stained for quite some time after. He loved to talk and was quite the storyteller; Lloyd always had something to say. He taught his kids respect, strong work ethics, and his important core values which they carried with them throughout their entire lives.
