Lois Amelia (Orth) Hanson

Lois Amelia (Orth) Hanson, age 88, of Mechanicsburg, PA, and formerly of Bristol, CT, died at Messiah Lifeways at Messiah Village on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.  Lois was born on Friday, October 11, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Charles Raymond Orth, Jr. and Eunice Caroline (Schaefer) Orth.  Lois was the widow of Lee George Hanson, whom she married on July 24, 1954, and who died on July 9, 2008.

Lois’ survivors include her brother, Alan Orth and his wife, Mrya, of Wayland, MA; her sister, Barbara Ortler and her husband, Raymond, of Chelmsford, MA; her two special nieces: Holly Althea Chapell of Washington, D.C., and Susan Jean Anganes and her husband, Alan, of Dracut, MA; as well as her eight additional nieces and nephews: Linda Crompton of Lowell, MA, David Orth of Leicester, MA, Sharon Powell of Marlboro, MA, Constance Williams of Leominster, MA, Lauren Chapell of Irving, TX, Marc Chapell of Arlington, TX, Roland Chapell of Waxahachie, TX, and Merry Dawson Bown of Alexandria, VA.

Lois graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, NY, as part of the class of 1947 and from Wheaton College, IL, in 1952 with a BS Degree in Biology.  A woman of faith, she was a member of: Sherwood United Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, PA, First Baptist Church in Elmhurst, IL, Bellerose Baptist Church in Floral Park, NY, Grace Baptist Church in Bristol, CT, Grantham Church in Mechanicsburg and Messiah Village Church in Mechanicsburg, PA.  Lois worked as a fifth grade teacher for three years and then worked as the office secretary at Grace Baptist Church for over 23 years.  She enjoyed volunteering her time which she did by serving in numerous positions over the years and mostly within the church.  She was a Sunday School Teacher, department superintendent, treasurer, director, Bible Teacher, craft teacher, record keeper, financial secretary, historian, librarian, Girl’s Club Program Director, Director of Girl’s Camp at Oak Ridge Camp, and publisher of daily news sheets just to name a few.  Her commitment to her Church and to the youth was without end.  In her free time, Lois enjoyed genealogy, reading, needlework, knitting, needlepoint, counted cross stitch, latch hook, plastic canvas, sewing, and crafts of all kinds.

To honor Lois’ commitment to health and education, her body has been donated to Pennsylvania Humanity Gifts Registry.  Lois’ family will be remembering her life privately.
