Luis Alberto Lugo
A Hero to his Family -
Luis Alberto Lugo (Wiso), age 72, of York Haven, Pennsylvania and formerly of Sumner, Illinois and Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2023. Luis was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Wednesday, March 28, 1951, were he was raised by his parents, the late Luis Alberto Lugo and Nereida (Sanchez) Lugo. In addition to his parents, Luis is preceded in death by his brother, Wilfredo “Freddie” Lugo, and his step-mother, Carmen Lugo.
Luis’s survivors include his loving wife, “Pat” Patricia Jean (McKee) Lugo; his four children: Luis R. Lugo and his wife, Palmer, of Chesapeake, VA; Antonio “Tony” I. Lugo and his wife, Laura, of York Haven, PA; Andres M. Lugo of Union, WV; Mariselle Ramos and her husband, Noel, of Apopka, FL; his seven grandchildren: Nina Lugo, Chloe Lugo, Brianna Lugo, Lucas Ramos, Olivia Ramos, Tino Lugo, Emersyn Lugo; his four siblings: Ricardo Lugo and his wife, Brunilda, of Palm Harbor, FL; Maritza Lugo-Pellot of Puerto Rico/Florida; Catherine Lugo and her wife, Ana, of Juncos, Puerto Rico; Dr. Raquel Lugo of Middletown, CT; and several nieces and nephews.
As a youth, Luis played baseball, his favorite sport, and was a player on the Santruce Cangrejeros, Puerto Rico’s professional league. At the age of 18, he was signed to play as a catcher for the Baltimore Orioles AA Team, the Miami Marlins. After playing for the Marlins, he returned home to Puerto Rico and played for the Los Gigantes de Carolina. Luis next major life decision was to join the United States Marine Corps where he proudly served his country for 24 years. He was a recon and scout sniper, jump and scuba qualified marine. Luis received many honors throughout his career reaching the rank of Master Sergeant (MSgt. E-8). He was even chosen to act in the movie Heartbreak Ridge starring Clint Eastwood in which he appeared numerous times. He traveled the world and served in over ten duty stations during his career with his beloved wife and children by his side.
Following his honorable discharge and retirement from the Marine Corps, Luis worked as a Deputy Sherriff in Chesapeake, Virginia for several years. He then became a military contractor who served in 11 tours in Iraq. At the conclusion of his final tour, Luis returned home to spend his days with his family and friends. During these years, he played in a softball league with his sons; listened to his favorite music, which included jazz, salsa and R&B; and went on many “Goonie” adventures with his wife, grandchildren and family. He enjoyed living his life to the fullest, loved his family with all his heart and was a hero to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

All are welcome to join Luis’s family at his graveside service with military honors on Friday, June 30, 2023, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, 60 Indiantown Gap Road, Annville, PA 17003. Guests may join the family at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory between 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to proceed to the cemetery or they may meet the family at the cemetery. Luis’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the interment. Cremation was private.
