Margaret “Marge” Lee (Porter) Lyles
Margaret “Marge” Lee (Porter) Lyles, age 90, of Mechanicsburg, peacefully passed from this life into eternal life on Sunday, February 21, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Marge was born on Tuesday, February 10, 1931, in Baltimore, MD to the late George Nicholas Porter and Catherine Frances (Helldorfer) Porter. Marge was the widow of Louis “Lou” Edward Lyles, whom she married on May 4, 1963, and who died on March 25, 2014. In addition to her parents and husband, Marge was preceded in death by her siblings Nicholas Harold Porter, Catherine Agnes (Porter) Androsko, and Regina Edna (Porter) Babka.
Marge’s survivors include her daughter, Catherine Leone Lyles Shelly, and son-in-law, Christopher, of Lewisberry; her two siblings: John Porter and wife, Patricia, of New Harbor, ME, Carolyn (Porter) Kreiner and husband, George, of York; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved feline companion, Simba.
Marge grew up in Bird River Beach, MD and attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parochial School. She graduated from Kenwood High School as part of the class of 1949. Upon graduation, she worked as a secretary at Stemmers Run Middle School. She then became a stewardess for Eastern Airlines, graciously serving passengers for nine years. Upon marriage to Lou (who was one of those passengers), she settled into life as a homemaker and mother, raising their daughter in Miami Springs, FL. She remained very active in her parish, Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, where she was part of the charismatic prayer group, lay ministry, women’s Emmaus group, and was the founding member of Grief Share bereavement support group. Her faith emanated from all that she said and did, and her love of neighbor was apparent.
Marge later became a licensed massage therapist and Reiki (energy healing) master. A lifelong lover of learning, she embarked on a study of alternative/natural health practices, which played a pivotal role in her recovery from breast cancer at age 63. Marge enthusiastically shared her knowledge with others, seeking to help them achieve health and wholeness. She pursued her passion for writing, authoring and publishing a book about Reiki and its Judeo-Christian connections. Following her husband’s death, Marge moved to Mechanicsburg, PA, where she became a resident at Bethany Village, close to where her daughter and son-in-law reside. Marge loved: people, singing, books, chocolate, animals (especially Simba and her grand-cats), naps, prayer (especially the Rosary), and most of all, her family.
