Marian Pauline (Schwarz) Smith, age 79, of Shiremanstown, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by her loving family on Monday, October 10, 2022.  Marian was born on Monday, September 27, 1943, in Harrisburg to the late William Merlin Schwarz, Sr. and Violet (List) Schwarz.  Marian was the widow of Terry Clayton Smith, whom she married on July 18, 1992, and who died on February 22, 2009.  In addition to her parents and husband, Marian is preceded in death by her grandson, Derek Barger; and her two brothers: William Merlin Schwarz, Jr. and James Conrad Schwarz.

Marian’s survivors include her four sons: Stephen “Steve” A. Orner and his wife, Sharon, of Manassas, VA; Donald “Don” F. Orner and his wife, Ann, of Mechanicsburg; James “Jim” C. Orner and his wife, Patti, of Dillsburg; Thomas “Tom” G. Orner of Duncannon; her five grandchildren: Neil Orner and his wife, Katie, of Lewisberry; Sharon Orner of Lemoyne; Justin Steele of Manassas, VA; Ashley Derr and her husband, Jonathan, of Enola; Jenna Barger of Mechanicsburg; her three great-grandchildren: Parker Denezza, Lily Derr, Stacey Derr; her sister, Sandra Mazza of Hayesville, NC; her sister in-law, Linda Swank of Harrisburg; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved feline companion, Angel.

Marian graduated from William Penn High School as part of the class of 1961.  She retired from Book of the Month Club in Mechanicsburg after many years of service working as a machine operator.  Marian loved animals, especially her cats, and enjoyed bird watching and feeding the birds and squirrels; the largest squirrels in the area were in her backyard.  Christmas was Marian’s favorite holiday and she enjoyed collecting anything Christmas, such as snowmen, elves and reindeer figurines.  She collected cat figurines as well and relished going to yard sales and the Salvation Army store to obtain some great finds.  Marian enjoyed tending to her flower gardens, going to the casino and watching both college and NFL football.  She loved to support her sons no matter their interests, from Tom playing his various instruments and singing, to attending hundreds of little league baseball games over the years.  She was an outstanding mother, a kind and generous person, and was known for her delicious cooking.  Marian will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

All are welcome to join Marian’s family at her open house gathering of family and friends with food on Thursday, October 20, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a time of remembrance at 12:30 p.m. at Buhrig’s Gathering Place, 25 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, (717) 766-3421 (next to Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory); with Celebrant George A.
