The Glue Who Kept Her Family Connected -
Marie Elizabeth (Garverick) Hoover, age 92, of Camp Hill , and formerly of New Cumberland , died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, April 20, 2015. Marie was born on Monday, June 5, 1922 in Harrisburg to the late John Robert Garverick and Anna Marie (Wall) Garverick. Marie was the widow of Robert “Bob” Charles Baker, whom she married on December 28, 1940, and who died on April 12, 1972 and of Vernon “Vern” Allen Hoover, whom she married on June 28, 2000, and who died on September 21, 2014. In addition to her parents and husbands, Marie is preceded in death by her grandson, Richard “Ricky” Bankert, Jr.; her granddaughter, Denise Lynn Baker; her daughter, Michele (Baker) Casey; and her sons-in-law, Richard Bankert, Sr. and Alexander V. Mohnach.
Marie’s survivors include her children: Bob Baker, Jr. of Mechanicsburg, Patti Bankert of Garnet Valley, John Baker and his wife, Rose, of Mechanicsburg, Elizabeth Leach and her husband, Michael, of Hartsdale, NY, Ann Pierce and her husband, Bill, of New Cumberland, Robert Casey, Bert Langendijk; her 23 grandchildren; her 29 great-grandchildren; her two great-great-grandchildren; and many beloved pets.
Marie graduated from William Penn High School as part of the class of 1940. She retired at age “75-years-young” from Valley Green Real Estate after 25 years of service working as a realtor. Marie was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg, and a former member of St. Theresa Parish and their Little Flowers Club . She was a member of Lower Allen VFW Post 7530 , Mechanicsburg Navy Depot Officers Club , and West Shore Elks Lodge 2257 . Marie had a fondness for the beach and enjoyed trips to the casino. She was tech savvy and loved laughing, dancing, and playing cards. Marie was a faithful Catholic, who was active in the Cursillo Movement since 1967 and who held a special devotion in her heart to the Holy Mother. She had a particular prayer chair that she would sit in during the middle of the night to pray the Rosary. Marie was affectionately known as “Gram” to many who were not her grandchildren. As the true matriarch of her family, Marie was “the glue who kept her family connected.”
All are welcome to join Marie’s family at her viewing on Sunday, April 26, 2015, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Marie’s Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, April 27, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church ; with Reverend Chester P. Snyder and Deacon Jack Paruso celebrating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery in Harrisburg. Marie’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at the Radisson Hotel in Camp Hill immediately following the burial.
