Marlin “Ike” Charles Eichelberger
An Accomplished Woodworker -
Marlin “Ike” Charles Eichelberger, age 94, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Friday, December 10, 2021. Ike was born on Saturday, October 15, 1927, in New Cumberland to the late Marlin Hyler Eichelberger and Mary Irene (Shettle) Eichelberger. Ike was the widower of Miriam “Mim” Catherine (Hamilton) Eichelberger, whom he married on July 31, 1948, and who died on March 17, 2015. In addition to his parents and wife, Ike is preceded in death by his two brothers, Robert Eichelberger and Richard Eichelberger; and his son in law, John Raymond Northrup.
Ike’s survivors include his two daughters: Lynda Sue Herr and husband, Frank, of Carlisle, and Sherry Ann Northrup of Mechanicsburg; his four grandchildren: Ronald Potteiger and wife, Melissa, Kimberly Martin, Tammy Furman and husband, Cory, and Jeremy Herr and significant other, Melissa Wilt; his five great-grandchildren: Hope Stansfield and husband, Cody, and their son, Levi Stansfield, Joshua Markham, Carson Martin, Alanah Smith, and Madalyn Herr; his two siblings: Earl B. Eichelberger and wife, Jean, and Betty Claybaugh; and several nieces and nephews.
Ike retired from Cumberland Valley School District in Mechanicsburg, after many years of service working as a custodian. Ike was a long-time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Enola, and had served as the groundskeeper at Silver Spring Presbyterian Church. Ike served his country in the United States Army. In his earlier life, Ike enjoyed hunting with his father; and he loved to spend time in his garden growing raspberries and strawberries. When the berries were ripe; his wife, “Mim”, would make delicious jelly. Ike also enjoyed spending time at the beach in Wildwood, NJ. He was dedicated to his work for the Cumberland Valley School District; however, in his free time he loved to spend time in his woodshop. He was an accomplished woodworker and could make many beautiful pieces of furniture and small items, such as Christmas ornaments. His grandchildren remember that they would receive something he had made in his woodshop. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
