Martha Morrison (Brumbaugh) Gates, 99, of Mechanicsburg , died at Holy Spirit Hospital on Saturday, March 16, 2013. She was born in Juniata, on Tuesday, February 24, 1914, daughter of the late Allen Edwin Brumbaugh and Martha Cedonia (Neff) Brumbaugh. Martha was the widow of Earl E. Gates whom she married on September 1, 1934, and who died on October 18, 1978.
Martha’s survivors include her children, Robert B. Gates and his wife Audrey of Mechanicsburg, Marjorie L. Bowers and her husband Donald of Harrisburg, Nancy J. Benson and her husband Victor of Rotterdam, NY, Denis E. Gates and his wife Debra Miller-Gates of East Hampton, NY; her daughter-in-law, Nancy L. Gates of Coshise, AZ; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Among those preceding Martha in death are her son, John P. Gates; and her brother, Julian N. Brumbaugh.
Martha graduated from Altoona High School as part of the class of 1932. She was first and foremost a mother and a homemaker. Martha’s family was the absolute joy in her life. She was a volunteer in the mail room and the library at Bethany Village . Martha enjoyed ceramics, reading, cooking and eating. She was an extremely organized woman.
All are welcome to join Martha’s family at her visitation on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, from 9:30 until time of service at 10:00 at Bethany Village , 325 Wesley Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with Pastor Glenn Pfeiffer officiating. Martha’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Bethany Village following the service. Burial will be held in Memory Gardens Cemetery and Memorial Park in Albany, NY, on Monday, March 25, 2013.
