Mary Catherine Gochnauer, 96, of Reading and formerly of Dillsburg and Mechanicsburg died Sunday, July 24, 2011 at Elmcroft. She was born on Monday, March 1, 1915 in Carroll Twp. the daughter of the late Frank W. and Ruth Emma (Albert) Peterman. She married her sweetheart of over 50 years, Lester J. Gochnauer, in May of 1932 and who she survived in February 1982.
Mary grew up in the Chestnut Grove area near Dillsburg. She was active in the Chestnut Grove Church, which was built on land donated by her great-grandfather. After moving to Mechanicsburg, Mary became an active member of Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church. She was also an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Seidle Memorial Hospital. Mary was a member of Cumberland Country Farm Group #6. When Mary moved to the Presbyterian Apartments, she continued the volunteer work she loved becoming a contributor to the monthly newsletter for which her favorite activity was writing poetry. In 2009, Mary moved to Reading to be closer to her family.
Mary is survived by one daughter: Wanita Scott of Harrisburg; one daughter-in-law: Ada L. Gochnauer of Reading; one granddaughter: Robin L. Owens and her husband Kevin of Orlando, FL; one grandson: Rick A. Gochnauer and his wife Jeanne of Reading; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one half-brother: John Peterman of Hollister, CA. She was preceded in death by one son; Richard L. Gochnauer and one daughter: Sally Ann Gochnauer.
All are welcome to join Mary’s family at her Graveside Service on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at 11:00 at Dillsburg Cemetery with Pastor Myrtle E. McCall officiating and Gary Weber as soloist.
