Matthew "Matt" Hartung
Tough Guy with a Generous Heart -
Matthew “Matt” Hartung, age 62, of Franklintown, and formerly of Mechanicsburg, passed away at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center on August 10, 2020, after a nearly seven-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. Matt was born on Tuesday, January 14, 1958, in Harrisburg to the late Floyd Leroy Hartung and Jean Louise (Jones) Hartung. In addition to his parents, Matt is preceded in death by his brother, Harry Hartung.
Matt’s survivors include his two brothers: Thomas “Tom” J. Hartung and wife Clara Mae of Mechanicsburg, Richard “Dick” C. Hartung and wife Carol of Wormleysburg; his two nephews: Keith T. Hartung and Kevin J. Hartung; his niece, Katie Fetrow; his companion and caretaker, Natalie Brosius; and his beloved pocket pitbull, Layla.
Matt attended St. Joseph grade school and Mechanicsburg High School. He served in the U.S. Army in South Korea and was a member of both the local VFW Post 7530 and the Mechanicsburg Club. Matt was an excellent heavy equipment operator, and he retired from the Mechanicsburg Navy Depot after many years of service working as a heavy equipment mechanic and operator. As a great welder and mechanic, Matt could fix anything from a lawn mower to a locomotive. He built catwalks for billboards and hung the billboards, too. He spent time as a roughneck on oil rigs out West, as well. Matt enjoyed racing, boating, hunting, fishing, football, and having fun with his friends and family. While he was a tough, street smart guy with practical sense, Matt was also generous and helpful to anyone in need. Matt made a lot of friends, who along with his family, will greatly miss him.
All are welcome to gather with Matt’s family at 10:15 a.m. for his graveside service with military honors at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2020, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, Pennsylvania.
