Michael William Walter, 73, of Lemoyne , and formerly of York , died peacefully on Friday, January 11, 2013. He was born in York, on Monday, November 13, 1939, son of the late Lind Dysart Walter and Edythe Lee (Mann) Walter.
Michael graduated from William Penn High School in York as part of the class of 1957. He was a devoted member of the Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church . Michael was a fiercely proud Sergeant 1 st Class (SFC) of the United States Army where he served our country for 20 years including two tours in Vietnam . He was awarded numerous citations and two Bronze Stars for meritorious service during his distinguished military career. “He was a great soldier,” remembers his brother and a fellow veteran, Ron, “and he was a great brother.”
Michael served as Vice-Commander of the Vietnam Veterans of Mechanicsburg from 1999 to Present and as a past Sr. Vice-Commander of the VFW Post 6704 in Mechanicsburg. He was instrumental in the resurrection of the Lincoln Cemetery where many fellow veterans are laid to rest. Michael was a life-long and unshakable Oakland Raiders and Oakland As fan. He worked at the Cumberland County Courthouse and volunteered with Pinnacle Health . His love of dogs and “little kids” was well known and he forever doted over his favorite dog, Bean.
Michael’s survivors include his brother, Ronald “Ron” L. Walter and his wife Denise of Wrightsville; his sister, Carlyn Williams and her husband Joseph of Ohio; several nieces, nephews and friends. Among those preceding Michael in death are his three brothers, Lind S. Walter, James E. Walter, Gerald R. Walter; and his sister, Evelyn Mease.
All are welcome to join Michael’s family at his viewing on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, from 5:00 until time of military honors at 7:00 with the VFW State Color Guard presenting, and on Thursday, January 17, 2013, from 9:00 until time of funeral service at 9:30 with Pastor Glenn “Woody” Dalton officiating, all at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Burial will follow in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, where military honors will be presented. Michael’s family requests that everyone wear casual clothing. Honored to be pallbearers are: Gary Reihart, Gerald Walter, Bob Bernatos, Eric Kamoie, Robert Griffiths and Chuck Musser. Michael’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship beginning at 1:00 at Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church , 2217 Derry Street, Harrisburg, PA 17104.
