A Teacher at Heart -

Mildred “Billie” (Loban) Baker, age 104, of Mechanicsburg , passed away at Messiah Lifeways at Messiah Village on Saturday, September 26, 2015.  Billie was born on Thursday, June 22, 1911 in Harrisburg, PA to the late Robert Loban and Anna (Hess) Loban.  Billie was the widow of Robert Harter Baker who she married on September 16, 1933 and who died on July 1, 1991.  In addition to her parents and husband, Billie is preceded in death by her two sisters and her only daughter, Alice Ann (Baker) Sarvis.

Billie’s survivors include her one son: George Loban Baker and his wife, Marlene, of Wake Forest, NC; her son-in-law, Glen Sarvis of Mechanicsburg; her six grandchildren; and her twelve great-grandchildren.

Billie graduated from William Penn High School as part of the class of 1929 and from Indiana State Teachers College in 1933.  She was a substitute teacher in Boyertown Area Schools in Pennsylvania, and in Seoul Foreign School in Seoul, Korea.  For years, Billie taught GED classes for the American Army in Seoul.  Her husband was on the international staff of the YMCA, and they were stationed in South Korea for more than ten years.  Billie had dual memberships in Messiah Village Brethren in Christ Church and Wesley United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg.  She was also a member of the Mechanicsburg Women’s Club .   For most of her life, Billie was a volunteer in social services, namely the YMCA, YWCA, USO, International Social Service, and Boystown of Korea, and she taught English as a second language.

All are welcome to join Billie’s family at her service on Saturday, October 3, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend Charles R. Burgard officiating.  Burial will follow in Paxtang Cemetery in Harrisburg.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Messiah Village Endowment Fund or the Messiah Village Christmas Fund , 100 Mount Allen Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
