Ralph Donald Reed
A Man of Great Integrity -
Ralph Donald Reed, age 92, of Shiremanstown, died peacefully in his sleep at Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, December 23, 2015. Ralph was born on Friday, August 17, 1923 in Calais, Maine, to the late Stanley Ernest Reed and Inez (Louden) Reed. Ralph was the widower of Helena May (Guistwhite) Reed, whom he married in 1954, and who died on November 14, 2007. In addition to his parents and wife, Ralph is preceded in death by his three brothers: Ben, Eugene, and Phil.
Ralph’s survivors include his loving daughter, Linda M. Reed of New Cumberland, PA; his granddog, Oliver, or Happy, as Ralph liked to call him; and several nieces and nephews.
Ralph was incredibly proud to have spent his career in the United States Armed Forces. He was made for the service, beginning his career in the U.S. Army, and then the U.S. Army Air Corps, and finally the U.S. Air Force, from which he retired as a senior master sergeant in 1970 after 28 years of service. Most of Ralph’s service time was spent in communications, but while stationed in Japan, he also worked in supply. It was in Japan that his beloved daughter, Linda, joined the family. A good man, he was a lifelong Methodist who was always fair and giving. Ralph was known to tell it like it was and to be firm in his beliefs and decisions. He was a man of great integrity. Ralph was a Steelers and Celtics fan. He loved animals and bluegrass music, and was always quick with a wisecrack. He will be deeply missed by Linda, Happy, and all who knew and loved him.
Ralph’s family will be remembering his life privately. A simple graveside service with military honors and interment in St. John’s Cemetery in Mechanicsburg will be at the family’s convenience. Cremation was private.
In keeping with Ralph’s love of animals, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Humane Society, 7790 Grayson Road, Harrisburg, PA 17111; www.HumaneSocietyHbg.org.
Ralph’s family has entrusted his care to Myers – Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory in Mechanicsburg, (717) 766-3421. Read Ralph’s full obituary, view his memorial portrait, and sign his official guest book at www.Myers-Buhrig.com .
