Ray “Junior” W. Smeigh
Ray “Junior” W. Smeigh, 84, of Mechanicsburg, died peacefully at home and surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, November 11th, 2014.
Ray was born on Friday, December 13, 1929 in Harrisburg, PA, to the late Ray W. and Marguerite (Yohn) Smeigh. Ray was raised in Enola, PA, and graduated from Enola High School. Ray was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army. Ray worked with the Pennsylvania Railroad until he entered into the trucking industry where he ultimately retired as a dispatcher from Lebarnold.
Ray married Alice Lou Horton on Saturday, February 13, 1954. Surviving Ray are his beloved wife of 60 years, Alice Lou (Horton) Smeigh; three sons: William “Wes” Smeigh of Mechanicsburg, Robert R. Smeigh and his wife Vignon (Fleming) Smeigh of Mechanicsburg, and John D. Smeigh and his wife Amy (Herrick) Smeigh of Annandale, Virginia; two daughters: Nancy J. Smeigh of Mechanicsburg, and Barbara J. (Smeigh) Bowman and her husband Paul Bowman of San Diego, California. Ray is survived by nine grandchildren: Daniel Eichelberger, Becky Eichelberger, Robert R. Smeigh Jr., Shawn Smeigh, Adam W. Smeigh, Andrew W. Smeigh, Jamie (Bowman) Kahlen, Jenifer (Bowman) Arias, and Hunter John Smeigh. He is also survived by ten great-grandchildren. Ray is survived by one brother, Carl Smeigh of Carlisle, and was predeceased by one sister, Mary Smeigh Withington, and three brothers: Charles, Donald and Dwight Smeigh.
Ray was a faithful New York Yankees fan and immensely enjoyed horse racing, perfecting his handicapping skills over the years. Most enjoyable was the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom held a very special place in his heart. Ray was an intriguing storyteller as his children and grandchildren loved to hear “Pap's” stories of past experiences and tales.
The family would like to express gratitude to the loving team of care providers from Celtic Hospice, who helped to ease Ray's final days on earth and helped Alice as she faithfully cared for Ray at home until the passing. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Celtic Hospice, 220 Wilson St #100, Carlisle, PA 17013, (717) 245-5600 .
