Richard Omohundro

Generous Spirit and Sense of Humor -

Richard Omohundro, age 86, of Mechanicsburg , died on Friday, May 9, 2014.  Richard was born on Thursday, June 9, 1927 in a taxicab in Brooklyn, NY to the late George Nelson Omohundro and Alice Sloane (Naismith) Omohundro.  Richard was the widower of Dorothy Jean (Hollenbeck) Omohundro, whom he married on June 1, 1957.

Richard’s survivors include his children: Mark Richard Omohundro of Mechanicsburg, Katharine Elizabeth Oakley of Lansdale, and Todd Stuart Omohundro of Lansdale; his sisters: Virginia Raynor of Florida, and Alice Roy of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.

After Richard completed his degree in journalism at NYU, he served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II.  At a young age, he worked at Newark Airport and always had a passion for airplanes and air travel.  Richard worked for a while as a journalist in Lancaster, PA, but the family settled in Mechanicsburg, where he spent most of his life.  He retired from the Pennsylvania Bankers Association in Harrisburg after 20 years of proudly running their school for bankers at Bucknell University every summer.  During his life, Richard visited London, France, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Iceland, Japan, and most of the regions in the United States.  He believed that travel broadens the mind and often took relatives on trips with him around the world.  Richard also had an uncanny knack for geography, and he passed on his inquisitive nature and love for learning to his children.  In addition to travel, Richard loved tennis, marching bands, drum and bugle corps, Irish dancing, musical theater, studying the history of World War II, and little league baseball.  He coached a little league baseball team to a championship and enjoyed remembering all the kids who played on that ragtag team.  Richard will be remembered and cherished for his humor and generous spirit.

Burial, with military honors presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard, will take place in Mechanicsburg Cemetery; and will be private and at the family’s convenience.  Cremation was private.

Richard’s family has entrusted his care to Myers – Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory in Mechanicsburg, (717) 766-3421.  Read Richard’s full obituary, view his memorial video and portrait, and sign his official guest book at www.Myers-Buhrig.com .
