Richard “Dick” Maxwell Johnston, age 97, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2019.  Dick was born on Tuesday, September 5, 1922 in Harrisburg to the late Maxwell David Johnston and Anna (Chiara) Johnston.  In addition to his parents, Dick is preceded in death by his sister.

Dick’s survivors include his wife of 73 years, Dortheda (Geib) Johnston; his nephew-in-law, Edward “Ed” Schell of Pompano Beach, FL; and his close friends: Linda Mitchell of Mechanicsburg and Carol Backley and her husband, Mike.

Dick loved his work and retired from the railroad, after 39 years of service working as an engineer.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg since 1960.  Dick enjoyed listening to Glenn Miller and big band music as well as doing Sudoku puzzles and counted cross-stitch, which he did many of.  He loved to tell jokes and share his kindness and generosity with those around him.  Dick truly loved his home and he enjoyed being there, especially with his wife.  The two met at Johnston’s Confectionary Store on 6th Street in Harrisburg, when Dick pointed to a sign that said, “Take me home”.  Dortheda said, “Okay” and Dick walked her home to the nurse’s apartment house on 3rd Street at the Polyclinic Hospital.

All are welcome to join Dick’s family at his gathering of family and friends on Thursday, December 5, 2019, from 10:30 a.m. until time of prayer service at 11:00 a.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with The Reverend Thomas J. Rozman officiating.  Interment in Resurrection Cemetery in Harrisburg will be private and at the convenience of the family.  Cremation was private.
