Richard “Pap” Eugene Cornman, Sr.
Answering His Last Call -
Richard “Pap” Eugene Cornman, Sr., age 67, of Mechanicsburg, passed away unexpectedly at Holy Spirit Hospital while being comforted by his loving family on Sunday, January 8, 2017. Pap was born on Monday, August 8, 1949 in Mechanicsburg to the late Sylvan “Pop” Charles Cornman and Betty Jane (Wevodau) Cornman.
Pap’s survivors include his wife of 19 years, Julia Ann (Parson) Cornman; his four children: Richard “Butch” Cornman, Jr. of Germany, Jason Cornman, Sr. of Mechanicsburg, Angela “Angie” Marie Stine of Mercersburg, Michael “Mike” James Hardsock of Altoona; his 13 grandchildren: Richard III, Nils, Helena, Whitni, Jason “Jake”, Jr., Isaiah, Maila, Blake, Kaitlyn, Tanya, Summer Rayne, Kaleb, Karlie; his great-grandson: Dominic; and his sister: Joyce Widener.
Pap graduated from Cumberland Valley High School as part of the class of 1969. He retired in 2011 from the Borough of Mechanicsburg having worked in both the Sewer Plant and the Highway Department. Pap was a third generation firefighter and long-time active member of Citizens Fire and Rescue Company #2, Station #27, the “Pride of the Hill” in Mechanicsburg serving as a Director, a member of the Fire Consolidation Committee, a member of the Fireman’s Relief Board, a member of the Apparatus Design Team, Head Chef in Charge, Chief Engineer, Chief Driver, master hay ride operator, and even as a janitor. There was nothing that Pap would not do to serve his station, his fellow firefighters, and his home town of Mechanicsburg. He enjoyed being one of the Pump Primers and part of the William’s Grove Historical Steam Engine Association where he loved to help run the antique Frick Sawmill. Pap enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He was a fabulous and loving husband, father, and grandfather who loved people and never missed an opportunity to visit with them. He will be deeply missed.
All are welcome to join Pap’s family at his celebration of life gathering and reception on Saturday, January 14, 2017, starting at 11:00 a.m., pausing for a time of remembrance and sharing of stories at 1:00 p.m., and then continuing until a fireman’s last call and procession at 3:00 p.m. all at New Kingstown Fire Company, Station 33, 277 North Locust Point Road, New Kingstown, PA 17072. The family invites all those attending to bring a covered dish or food item to share. Fire apparatus are welcome at any time but must arrive by 2:30 p.m. in order to participate in the last call and procession passing Station 27. Cremation was private.
