Robert Cockrell Sr.
The whispering in my head
that fills sleepless nights,
tells me my swan song
is gaining momentum.
Words glide gracefully across
this pond called life,
and all I can do is to listen
with all my heart
to the music of my
almost imperceptibly slowing
breath sounds, and wait
for the next great journey
to begin.
Never before have I felt
so deeply held in love
than I do now,
in this final ascent,
the pain at last draining
from my body, my loved ones
gathered around me,
filling me with tenderness
and sweet memories,
like warm maple syrup
pouring over a plate
of fresh blueberry pancakes,
each fruit a mourner
holding back tears.
It's time, dear ones,
to release me.
I will always be with you.
