Robert C. Gwin
Robert Clayton Gwin, 94, of Mechanicsburg, PA, passed away March 7, 2020, in Geisinger Holy Spirit Hospital after suffering a fall on February 23, 2020.
He was born in Antis Township, Blair County, PA and grew up in Altoona, PA, the son of Robert Crawford Gwin and Marie Taylor. He graduated from Altoona High School and served in the Coast Guard during World War II; patrolling the beaches of North Carolina on horseback and on wartime patrols aboard the USS CHARLOTTESVILLE in the Pacific theater.
Bob was an enthusiastic entrepreneur and created three successful businesses – Robert C. Gwin Plumbing and Heating, Carriage House Lounge, and Family Craft Center. He served as a Hampden Township Commissioner, 4 terms as Cumberland County Clerk of Courts, and Chairman of the Cumberland County Republican Party. Bob enjoyed travelling, boating, golfing, and watching baseball games. He had been a member of the Lions Club, American Legion, Free and Accepted Masons, the Harrisburg Consistory, the Zembo Temple, and the West Shore Chamber of Commerce. He was a life member of VFW Post 6704.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, step-daughter Deborah Gerhold, and step-son George Hevel III. He is survived by his daughter Leslie, daughter Lindyll Finley and her husband Rear Admiral (Ret) Michael Finley USN, grandson Edward Finley and his wife Stephanie, sister Miriam Gwin, and step-son Allen Hevel, a Navy veteran who served on USS BELKNAP.
Bob was very much loved by his family and they will all miss his good nature and great sense of humor. They were all so blessed to have him in their lives.
All are welcome to join Robert’s family at his viewing on Friday, March 13, 2020, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 10:30 a.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend Laura Stewart officiating. Robert’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service. Guests are welcome at Buhrig's Gathering Place any time between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow the reception in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, where military honors will be presented.
