Robert “Bob” Russell Hanshaw
Robert “Bob” Russell Hanshaw, age 75, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Steelton, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 1, 2020, with his loving children and grandson by his side. Bob was born on Saturday, December 23, 1944, in Steelton, to the late Herman M. Hanshaw and Julia Catherine (Faznar) Neubaum. In addition to his biological parents, Bob is preceded in death by Bayard “Spike” T. D. Reider and Alberta “Bert” Reider, who raised him from an early age; and his two siblings: Martin “Marty” Livingston and Mary Lou Ceccacci.
Bob’s survivors include his two children: Christopher “Chris” Hanshaw and wife Vanessa of Boiling Springs, Jennifer “Jen” L. Hanshaw of Mechanicsburg; his grandson Tristan C. Hanshaw; his two nephews: Nicholas Ceccacci of Howell, MI, Anthony Ceccacci of Houston, TX; and his niece Christine Pefley of Roseville, MI.
Bob graduated from Steelton Highspire High School as part of the class of 1962 and later from Harrisburg Area Community College. Bob proudly served in the U.S. Army and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard from 1964 until 1991. He served as a relief house parent, with his former spouse Lee, at the Milton Hershey School, and retired from Naval Support Activity in Mechanicsburg after many years of service working as an IT Manager. During his retirement, Bob worked at Harrisburg Auto Auction, which helped to fuel his love of cars, especially Corvettes. From his time in the military to the hours he spent as a volunteer at Bethesda Mission and the YMCA in Harrisburg, and as a candy striper at Holy Spirit Hospital; Bob’s life was one of service. Many will remember Bob from all the years he served as the volunteer chairperson of the credit committee for Members 1st Federal Credit Union. Bob grew up playing football and baseball and had a passion for Penn State Football. He was well known in Jen’s softball circles because he was extremely active in her softball career. He was very proud of Jen and loved watching her play. When his grandson Tristan began wrestling, Bob could be found in the stands at matches and practices. In his leisure time, Bob loved to boat and fish. He was also a world traveler, having visited the far off lands of China, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Mexico, Bahrain and Germany. Bob’s family remembers that he had a magnetic personality that drew people to him. He knew many people and had an uncanny ability to meet up with an acquaintance no matter where he traveled. His family will greatly miss the love and support that Bob gave to them.
