Robert “Bob” Emory Smith
A Hard Working Man -
Robert “Bob” Emory Smith, age 89, of York Haven, passed away on Friday, October 30, 2020. Bob was born on Sunday, October 11, 1931, in Steelton to the late John Smith and Daisy (Griffith) Smith. In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in death by his eight siblings, and his step son, Richard “Rick” Evans.
Bob’s survivors include his wife of 53 years, Darlene Rae (Heckman) Smith; four children: Deborah “Deb” Baker and her husband, Blaine, of Camp Hill; Michelle Quigley and her husband, Scott, of Carlisle; Robert “Bobby” Smith of Steelton; Danny Evans of Etters; his eight grandchildren; his eight great-grandchildren; his three siblings: William Smith, Earl Smith and Margaret Sprenkle; and his several nieces and nephews.
Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. After serving in the military, Bob started a career as a truck driver, first for Miller’s Furniture in Harrisburg and later for Hall’s Trucking Company, where he drove for 25 years. He retired after ten years of service for Carolina Freight. Bob was very witty and had a terrific sense of humor. He enjoyed joking with his family and friends. Bob was very serious about his role as a provider for his family; he was a hard worker and managed his money, with great skill. He loved his home, his family and those that he considered friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
All are welcome to join Bob’s family at his gathering of family and friends on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 10:15 a.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Celebrant Patti Vogl officiating. Bob’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service. Burial with military honors will follow the reception in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville.
Contributions in celebration of Bob’s life can be made to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
