Robert “Alex” Alexander Mackey

Robert “Alex” Alexander Mackey, age 75, of Harrisburg, and formerly of Mechanicsburg, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. Alex was born on Tuesday, June 19, 1945, in Mechanicsburg to the late James Shatswell Mackey, Sr. and Nellie Ida (Carter) Mackey. In addition to his parents, Alex is preceded in death by his brother and two sisters.
Alex’s survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gloria Lee (Hammaker) Mackey; his three children: Annette Lynne Miller of Harrisburg, Wayne Prescott Mackey and wife Melissa Ann of Mechanicsburg, Christa Noelle Mackey and husband Kenneth Barnard of San Pedro, California; his three grandchildren: Kaitlyn Mary Mackey, Justin Foster Mackey, Alexia Suzanne Mackey; and his nieces and nephew: Irene Cekovich, Nicholas Cekovich, Cynthia Hinderliter, Jaqueline Porter, and Deb Kramarich.
Alex graduated from Mechanicsburg High School as part of the class of 1964. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and served as a drummer in the United States Army Band for four years. He was an American Legion member. Alex retired in 2020 from Leidos in Harrisburg, after 45 years of service working as a CADD drafter. For 28 years, Alex belonged to Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mechanicsburg, where he served as a deacon, financial secretary, and a teacher in both the junior church and Sunday school. Alex loved children, and he wanted to lead them to the Lord and inspire them for a life with Christ. Alex was Gloria’s rock, best friend, lover, and all in all, and she will miss him terribly.
All are welcome to join Alex’s family for his in-person viewing on Thursday, December 31, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; and for his virtual gathering of family and friends, viewing, and service via video chat or telephone beginning at 11:15 a.m.; with Pastor Steve Crews officiating. The family invites everyone to join them for Alex’s cemetery service and burial at 2:00 p.m. in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, PA, where military honors will be presented.
While Alex’s family will not be accepting flowers, they invite those wishing to celebrate Alex’s life with a memorial contribution to make them to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 4861 East Trindle Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050; www.EBC-EBCA.org.
