Robert “Bob” Lee Shannon, Sr., 89, of Mechanicsburg , died at Bridges at Bent Creek on Sunday, February 17, 2013. He was born in Carlisle, on Thursday, November 8, 1923, son of the late Roy R. Shannon and Mary (Watson) Shannon. Bob was the widower of Mildred L. (Shaffer) Shannon whom he married on January 31, 1942, and who died on November 23, 2001.
Bob retired from US Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, after 35 years of service working as foreman of the electric shop. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg. Bob was a US Army WW II Veteran serving in the European Theatre . He was a collector of a variety of different things, including Hess Trucks, baseball cards and his favorite, HO gauge and smaller gauge model trains. Bob put on many train shows for his grandchildren, great- grandchildren and many other groups of children. He enjoyed traveling the world. Bob also loved to hunt and fish in his younger years. He was a member of Mechanicsburg Club , VFW Post 6771 , Dillsburg, American Legion Post 109 , Mechanicsburg, Steelton Moose , and Carlisle Eagles .
Bob’s survivors include his loving children, Robert L. Shannon, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Dillsburg, Donna L. D’Agostino and her husband Robert of Mechanicsburg; three grandchildren, Kristin D’Agostino, Heather Shannon, and Timothy Shannon and his wife Jamie; five great-grandchildren, Robby, Benjamin, David, Michael and Viola Shannon; and his sister, Phyllis Myers and her husband Richard of Butler. Among those preceding Bob in death are a great-grandson, Jimmy Shannon; a brother, Carl Shannon; and a sister, Ileen Martin.
All are welcome to join Bob’s family at his viewing on Thursday, February 21, 2013 from 9:30 until time of service at 10:30 at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with Pastor Michael V. Minnix officiating.
Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery in Mechanicsburg, where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard .
