A Devoted Family Man-

Robert "Bob" Eugene Smith, Sr., age 88, of Mechanicsburg died at home and surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, December 21, 2021. Bob was born on Thursday, August 31, 1933, in Mechanicsburg to the late Raymond Clarence Smith, Sr. and Margaret Viola (Adams) Smith.  Bob was the widow of Betty “Barby” Jane (Smith) Smith, whom he married on September 29, 1953, and who died on November 19, 2020.  In addition to his parents and wife, Bob is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jessica Nelson.

Bob’s survivors include his two sons: Robert E. Smith, Jr. and wife, Debi, of Carlisle; William F. Smith and wife, Wendy, of Mechanicsburg; his three daughters: Deborah Rees and husband, Randy, of Cabool, MO; Sharon Nelson and husband, Mark, of Mechanicsburg; Lori Himes of East Berlin; his 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; his brother; and several nieces and nephews.

Bob’s devotion to his wife of 67 years, Betty Barb, continues in heaven now as they celebrate in the arms of Jesus together. Bob’s family was the highlight of his life, enjoying large family gatherings, following their many successes, athletic events, and time hunting and fishing with them. He especially looked forward to his trips with Barby to visit his daughter in Missouri. Holiday meals were some of “Pap’s” favorites, from the preparation, right through to finishing off the last of the grandkids plates.  Bob was a dedicated computer programmer at “IBM” for over 30 years and later in retirement, drove for Freysinger Auto Group. He was a member of the Citizens Fire and Rescue Company where he enjoyed supporting their many meal offerings, pitching in a hand where ever needed. Bob was a member of the Mechanicsburg First Church of God where he also volunteered his culinary talents and expert dish washing skills. Bob faithfully served in the US Army.

All are welcome to join Bob’s family at his viewing on Tuesday, December 28, 2021, from 10:15 a.m. until 11:15 a.m with his service beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend Glen Osborn officiating.  A virtual gathering and service via video chat or telephone will begin at 11:15 a.m.  Burial will follow the service in Mechanicsburg Cemetery, where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard.  Bob’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the burial.
