Roland DeWitt Stock
A Famously Affable, Curious, and Capable Man -
Roland DeWitt Stock, age 68, of Mechanicsburg, died peacefully at a hospice residence in Harrisburg while being surrounded and supported by his loved ones on Monday, December 5, 2016, from complications of cancer. Roland was born on Saturday, October 9, 1948 in Rosebud, TX to Josephine DeWitt Stock and the late George Stock.
Roland’s survivors include his wife of 39 years, Melissa Doepke (Myers) Stock; his three children: Kathryn “Katie” Stock Stevenson of Camp Hill, Miles Stock and his wife, Heather, of Camp Hill, Zachary “Zach” Stock and his partner, Amanda Staples, of Philadelphia; his two grandchildren, Levi and Selah Stevenson of Camp Hill; his mother, Josephine Stock of Glen Ellyn, IL; his brother, Barry Stock and his wife, Mary, of Austin, TX; his sister, Cathy Neyland and her husband, Bob, of Glen Ellyn, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Rosebud, TX, Roland studied business at Texas A&M University before moving to Austin in the 1970s where he owned and operated a guitar shop. Married in 1976, his interest in woodworking branched into restoration carpentry. Roland moved to Mechanicsburg in 1979 where he began a 30-year career with Ed Lank Kitchens of Lemoyne, PA, the first half as a designer, and the second half as an owner. In retirement, he returned to his love of guitars; playing, repairing, and building instruments. Being an engaging storyteller, writer, retreat leader, craftsman, musician, and tennis player afforded him a diverse network of friends. He attended Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster and was a supporter and mentor for Center for Champions, in Harrisburg. Roland was famously affable, curious, capable, and always full of humor and wisdom. He was a wellspring of devotion and inspiration to his family and the many people he loved.
All are welcome to join Roland’s family at his memorial service on Saturday, December 17, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. with a time of gathering and visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Mechanicsburg Brethren in Christ Church, 1050 South York Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Pastor Susan Gascho Cooke officiating. Roland’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at the church following the service. Cremation was private.
