Romaine “Mainie” Kistler, age 100, of Carlisle , and formerly of Mechanicsburg and Blain , died peacefully on Wednesday, July 23, 2014. Mainie was born on Thursday, January 22, 1914 in Blain to the late Dr. Edwin C. Kistler and Florence (Fetrow) Kistler. In addition to her parents, Mainie is preceded in death by her two sisters, Helen Swartz and Kathryn Heckman.
Mainie is survived by her numerous nieces and nephews, including her three special nieces: Darlene Smith and her husband, Bob, of Newberrytown, Patricia Trimmer and her husband, Ted, of Mechanicsburg, Carolyn Linn and her husband, Gene, of North Carolina; and her two special nephews: Ted Swartz of Kansas, and Peter “Pete” A. Swartz and his wife, Louise, of Mechanicsburg.
Mainie graduated from Blain High School and then from Shippensburg Normal School in 1934. She retired from Merchants and Business Men's Mutual Insurance Company after a long career and at the age of 70. Mainie was a long-time member of Shepherdstown United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg. With a sincere and deep love of people, Mainie was recognized by many as the “most giving person” you could ever meet. She greatly enjoyed her family trips to Ocean Grove, NJ, her knitting, her crocheting, and her crossword and Sudoku puzzles. Mainie’s ability to name all of the states alphabetically, both forward and backwards, was just one of the unique things her family will always remember. She was a “cool” person who will be greatly missed.
All are welcome to join Mainie’s family at her viewing on Friday, August 1, 2014, from 12:30 p.m. until time of funeral service at 1:30 p.m. at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend Dr. Timothy R. Baer and Reverend Anna Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Newville. Honored to be pallbearers are: Jon Linn, Michael Swartz, Marcus Rafiee, Blain Baker, Gene Linn, and Paul McComas.
