Rufus “RJ” Junior Boyer

Avid Outdoorsman -

Rufus “RJ” Junior Boyer, age 87, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Chambersburg, completed his earthly journey and arrived at his Heavenly home on Thursday, March 14, 2019.  RJ was born on Saturday, April 4, 1931 in Gowen City to the late Rufus Boyer and Ruth (Whary) Boyer.  In addition to his parents, RJ is preceded in death by his three brothers: Darrell “Pat”, Grant “Rusty”, and Walter “Wally”; and his three sisters: Betty, Florence “Liz”, and Alma; and his four beloved canine companions.

RJ’s survivors include his wife of 46 years, Bonnie Lee (Miller) Boyer; his son, Matthew “Matt” Todd Boyer and his wife, Karen Ruth, of York; his brother-in-law; his two sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved Miniature Schnauzer, Hans.

RJ graduated from Shamokin High School as part of the class of 1949.  He retired from Mack Trucks in Hagerstown, after proudly serving 30 years as a machinist.  RJ was a member of Christian Life Assembly in Camp Hill and was a veteran of the United States Air Force.  He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting, boating and fishing.  RJ especially loved fishing for salmon in New York and Canada.  He timbered the lot for their cabin near Raystown Lake and oversaw the construction of the cabin; being a machinist by trade, he was mechanically inclined.  RJ also had a talent for woodworking.  Bonnie has a grandfather clock and a curio cabinet made by her husband that she will treasure forever.  Matt will cherish the memories he made with his dad as the two restored a 1966 Mustang.  He also has many memories of the mischief that he and his close friend, Scott, got into.  When caught by Bonnie, RJ would give his signature wink and a nod, only to suggest that the two should be more discreet with their behavior.

All are welcome to join RJ’s family at his viewing on Friday, March 22, 2019, from 11:30 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. and a committal ceremony with military honors to presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard to follow, all at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend Philip Bongiorno officiating.  RJ’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at the Radisson, 1150 Camp Hill Bypass, Camp Hill, PA 17011, immediately following the service.  Burial will follow on Monday, March 25, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the Miller Cemetery in Justus, PA.  Honored to be pallbearers are: Matt Boyer, Wally Boyer, Curt Boyer, Greg Bonshock, Ethan Bancala, and Jordan Bancala.

RJ’s family has entrusted his care to Myers – Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory in Mechanicsburg, (717) 766-3421.  Read RJ’s full obituary, view his memorial video and portrait, and sign his official guest book at Buhrig.com.
