Loved To Fish -

Russell “Russ” Gavlak, age 87, of Mechanicsburg , and formerly of New Jersey & New Hampshire , died at home and surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, June 8, 2014.  Russ was born on Saturday, January 1, 1927 in Bergen, NJ to the late Frank W. Gavlak and Regina (Ziemecki) Gavlak.  Russ was the husband of Patricia Elaine (Gauntt) Gavlak with whom he had spent 25 wonderful years.  In addition to his parents, Russ is preceded in death by his sister, Doris Scott.

Russ’s survivors include his loving wife Patricia;  his children, Debra Stevens of Belmont, MA, Russell Gavlak and his wife Luz of Hudson, NH; his stepchildren, Patti Vogl and her husband Brian of Mechanicsburg, Bob Ensslen and his wife Terry of Gilead, ME, Barb Goll and her husband Bruce of Washington, NC; his granddaughter, Olivia Gavlak; his step-grandchildren, Jessica, Christina, Jenny, Nick, Phillip, Ben, Kelsey, Rachel, Hunter; his step-great-grandchildren, Jaylin and Jamison; several nieces and nephews; and special cousins, the Mohowski’s and Karosen’s.

Russ graduated from East Rutherford High School in New Jersey.  He entered the US Navy as a corpsman during WWII immediately following high school graduation.  Russ retired from Bergen County where he worked as the recorder of deeds. He had owned and operated the Park Avenue Seafood Market in Rutherford, NJ.  Russ was a member of Eclipse Lodge # 259 F & AM and the Wallington Fireman’s Association , both in Rutherford, NJ.  He was an avid freshwater fisherman and loved the outdoors and cooking.

A Memorial Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date. Cremation and scattering of Russ’ ashes will be private and at the family’s convenience.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Homeland Hospice, 2300 Vartan Way, Suite 115, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
