Las Vegas Bound -
Sara O. (Torbert) McDermott, age 97, of Mechanicsburg , died peacefully at her home on Saturday, February 21, 2015. Sara was born on Friday, June 29, 1917 in Delta, PA to the late Vallie Torbert and Belva (Wright) Torbert. Sara was the widow of Paul “Potty” Lawrence McDermott, whom she married in 1933, and who died on May 15, 1984. In addition to her parents and husband, Sara is preceded in death by her son, Larry Lee McDermott.
Sara’s survivors include her daughter, Carol Scheffer and her husband, Bill, of Mechanicsburg; her four granddaughters, Sally Arndt and her husband, Ken, Lu Pensinger, Dawn Gochenaur and her husband, Doug, Harriet Richardson and her companion, Todd Sheaffer; her four great-grandchildren, Alex, Corey, Ashley, Cody; and her great-great-grandson, Blake.
Sara was a member of several organizations, including American Legion , VFW , Society of Farm Women , and Old Bellaire Chapter #375 of the Eastern Star . For 30 years, she enjoyed spending the winter season in Florida. Sara loved to travel with her family. Among her favorite destinations was Brigantine and Las Vegas, a tradition that continued for 20 years. She found games of any kind to be great fun, but especially enjoyed playing pinochle. Some of Sara’s favorite things to do were yard-sales and shopping. She loved going to church and enjoyed going out for breakfast afterward. One of Sara’s favorite hymns was “Let There Be Peace On Earth”. She will always be remembered as a fun and loving person.
All are welcome to join Sara’s family at her viewing on Friday, February 27, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with The Reverend Caitlin Glass officiating. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery in Mechanicsburg. Honored to be pallbearers are Doug Gochenaur, Todd Sheaffer, Ken Arndt, Bill Scheffer, and Corey Gochenaur. Sara’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at St. Stephen Lutheran Church , 30 West Main Street, New Kingstown, PA 17072, following the burial.
