Stanley Thomas Smith, 74, of Mechanicsburg , died at Holy Spirit Hospital on Sunday, February 2, 2014. He was born in Battle Creek, MI, on Sunday, November 26, 1939, son of the late Herbert Lionel Smith and Dorothy (Jerue) Smith. Stanley was the husband of Ruth Ann (Backley) Smith whom he married on August 16, 1970.
Stanley’s survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Ruth Smith; his daughters, Lisa S. DeVore and her husband Adam of Williamsburg, VA, Kelly Jo Smith of Battle Creek, MI; his granddaughter, Lauren Brooke DeVore; his brother, Roy Smith of Battle Creek, MI; and his brother-in-laws, Robert M. Backley and Michael J. Backley. Among those preceding Stanley in death are his siblings, Herbert Smith, Bill Smith, and Bonnie Smith.
Stanley retired from the US Navy , after 20 years of service as a hospital corpsman. After retirement from the Navy, he also worked at the Camp Hill State Prison as the Maintenance Superintendent. Stanley was a licensed master electrician. He was a Vietnam Veteran and also served with the US Marine Corps 2nd and 3rd Divisions in Vietnam. Stanley was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, RVN Cross of Gallantry Ribbon, RVN Civil Action Ribbon, and a Joint Armed Services Commendation. Stanley was a member of the Dillsburg VFW Post # 6771 , Mechanicsburg American Legion Post # 109 , and the Fleet Reserve Association . Stanley was a moral, selfless man who enjoyed playing the banjo, hunting, fishing, rehabilitating parrots, and more than anything, helping those in need.
All are welcome to join Stanley’s family at a Gathering of Family and Friends on Saturday, February 8, 2014, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Services and burial in Rolling Green Memorial Park with military honors provided by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be private and at the family’s convenience.
