Terry Joe Turnbaugh ~ “Mr. T”
Caring Father, Grandfather, and Teacher -
Terry Joe Turnbaugh, age 67, of Carlisle , and formerly of Tyrone , died at home on Monday, August 24, 2015. Terry was born on Thursday, March 11, 1948 in Philipsburg, PA to the late Joseph D. Turnbaugh and Mabel (Bickel) Turnbaugh.
Terry’s survivors include his twin sons, their wives, and eight grandchildren: Brandon M. Turnbaugh and his wife, Bonnie, and their two children, Sophia and Phoebe, all of Oswego, NY, Derek J. Turnbaugh and his wife, Jody, and their six children: Cassidy, Eliana, Uriah, Sincerity, Gideon, Nehemiah, all of Northampton, PA; and his brother, Larry L. Turnbaugh and his wife, Robyn, of New Hampshire.
Terry graduated from Tyrone Area High School as part of the class of 1966. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Juniata College and his master’s degree from Penn State University . Terry retired from Cumberland Valley School District in Mechanicsburg, after over 30 years of service working as a psychology and sociology teacher. He also worked at Penn State Harrisburg as a Residence Living Coordinator. Terry was a member of Trindle Spring Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg. He was a member of the Mechanicsburg Club , American Legion , and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Carlisle Lodge No. 578 . Terry enjoyed sports immensely, and he was especially a fan of Notre Dame football. He was a very talented quarterback in high school and college. His passion was teaching; and Terry personally cared about his co-workers and students. He tried to teach life-applicable information that his students could carry with them all throughout their lives. Terry also loved his sons very much and absolutely adored his grandchildren. Terry went out of his way for anybody; and he sacrificed for his boys, giving to them without any hope of something in return. To help his sons flourish in life, Terry balanced his giving nature with teaching discipline in everything from managing money and time to the importance of good writing. His sons fondly remember Terry as a loving, caring, giving, compassionate person, and he will be dearly missed.
