Thomas “Tom” George Yost, 86, of Mechanicsburg , died at home and surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, November 14, 2012. He was born in Myerstown, on Thursday, October 7, 1926, son of the late Charles Laverne Yost and Elizabeth Price (Yingst) Yost. Tom was the widower of Jean Elizabeth (Shue) Yost whom he married on August 5, 1950, and who died on March 20, 2008.
Tom was an Air Force Veteran who served as Director of the Air Force Jazz Band . He was a proud and active alumnus of Lock Haven University who formed a swing band during his college years. Music, especially singing, was Tom’s passion. He was a member and past president of the Keystone Capital Chorus and a former “ Barbershopper of the Year” . Tom retired in 1988 from Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School where he was an educator, administrator and championship coach of baseball, basketball, football and golf. He also served as the Head Defensive Backfield Coach at Dickinson College during the 1970s and 1980s. Tom enjoyed sports of all kinds and he shared his enjoyment with this children and grandchildren.
Tom’s survivors include his two loving children, Benjamin Yost and his wife Barbara of Mechanicsburg, Jennifer Yost-Lee of State College; his five grandchildren, Matthew Yost, Nicole Shields and her husband Christopher, Margaret Lee and her partner Miles Lizak, Susanna Lee, Elizabeth Lee; his sister, Julia Kretsinger of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. Among those preceding Tom in death is his sister, Margaret Shreffler.
All are welcome to join Tom’s family at his visitation on Saturday, December 1, 2012, from 10:00 until time of service at 11:00 at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church , 117 West Keller Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with Pastor Randall J. Marburger officiating. Cremation and then interment in St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church’s Columbarium was private. Tom’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at his church immediately following the memorial service.
