Thomas “Tom” Warren Grammer

Thomas “Tom” Warren Grammer, age 90, of Mechanicsburg , died at Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home, Carlisle, on Wednesday, July 9, 2014. Tom was born on Friday, August 31, 1923 in Wright City, OK to the late Seward Grammer and Lucy Harnesberger. Tom was the husband of Shirley Louise (Fetter) Grammer whom he married on July 18, 1959. In addition to his parents, Tom is preceded in death by his siblings: Kathryn Grammer, Gordon Grammer, Mary Jane Grammer; and his aunt, Henrietta Harnesberger, who raised him from the age of two.
Tom’s survivors include his wife, Shirley, of almost 55 years; his children: Kathy Sundy and her husband, Jim, of Enola, Susan Dever and her husband, Michael, of Hatboro, Tom Grammer and his partner, Bill Adair, of Philadelphia; his grandchildren: Dylan Sundy, Samantha Sundy, Hunter Sundy, Shannon Sundy, Jeffrey Dever, Allison Dever and Elizabeth Dever; and several nieces and nephews.
Tom graduated from Wright City High School as part of the class of 1940. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 21 years of service as a Master Chief Petty Officer radioman and a WWII and Korean War veteran. He later retired from the Ships Parts Control Center . While serving in the Navy, Tom was in charge of the radio school at Bainbridge, MD. Tom was a member of St. Paul’s UCC in Mechanicsburg, where he served on the consistory and as a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 109 in Mechanicsburg and the Fleet Reserve Association . Tom loved reading and writing poetry. Family vacations consisted of visiting family and always centered on family. He was a “good wisecracker” with an incredible sense of humor. Tom’s greatest attribute was his honesty.
All are welcome to join Tom’s family at his viewing on Monday, July 14, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s UCC , 626 Williams Grove Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverends John Ward-Diorio and Anna Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Rolling Green Memorial Park in Camp Hill, where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard . Tom’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at his church following the burial. Honored to be pallbearers are: Thomas W. Grammer, Jr., Dylan Sundy, Hunter Sundy, Jim Sundy, Michael Dever, and Jeffrey Dever.
