Thomas “Tom” Cook Lorenz
Thomas “Tom” Cook Lorenz, 86, of Mechanicsburg , and formerly of Camp Hill , passed away at Holy Spirit Hospital on Saturday, March 30, 2013. He was born in Havertown, on Sunday, October 3, 1926, son of the late Frederick Ross Lorenz and Margaret (Cook) Lorenz. Tom was the husband of Katharine “Kay” Sagendorph (Perkins) Lorenz whom he married on February 23, 1952.
In addition to Kay, his loving wife of 61 years, Tom’s survivors include his three sons, Steven Lorenz and his wife Olicea of Houston, TX, Craig Lorenz of Orlando, FL, Brian Lorenz of Hartford, CT; five grandchildren, Heather, Jason, Alyson, David and Adam; four great-grandchildren; and two cousins, Thomas Cook of Quarryville, PA, and Jean Ann Widman of Portland, Oregon. Among those preceding Tom in death are his brother, F. Ross Lorenz and his cousin, Doris Boyce.
Tom dedicated his life to the Christian values he so strongly believed which was obvious to those who encountered him as they experienced his kind manner, generous heart, and sense of humor. He was a member and Elder of Christ Presbyterian Church in Camp Hill, he was active in local Parent Teacher Associations, Past President of the West Shore Council of PTA’s , Regional Vice President of the Pennsylvania PTA where he served on the State Board of Managers. Tom also served as Past President of the Torch Club of Harrisburg and was a Habitat and Downtown Daily Bread volunteer.
Tom was a proud Army Veteran of the Korean War. An accomplished clarinetist, Tom was a member of the New Singer Band of Mechanicsburg, the Bell Telephone Pioneer Band and a past member of the Hershey Symphony . His most avid interest was his part-time hobby of meteorology which included providing severe weather forecasts to Fairview Township . Tom was also known as an avid gardening and landscaping enthusiast.
All are welcome to join Tom’s family at his gathering of family and friends on Saturday, June 8, 2013, from 1:30 until time of memorial service at 2:00 at Christ Presbyterian Church , 421 Deerfield Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011, with Pastor Anne Myers officiating. Scattering will follow in the Church’s Memorial Garden , where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard . Cremation was private. Tom’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at his church following the scattering.
