Thomas “Tom” B.
Stewart Sr., 87, died peacefully at his home in Mechanicsburg with his family at his side on Wednesday, June 08, 2011. Tom was born on Friday, February 1, 1924 in Yeagertown, PA. He was the youngest of five children born to the late Thomas F. and Sara May (Goodwin) Stewart.
Tom graduated from Yeagertown High School in 1943. He married his wife Betty on July 10, 1947 and enjoyed 52 years with her at his side.
A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a corrections officer at White Hill Penitentiary for 35 years.
Tom was a member of West Shore Elks #2257 and Mechanicsburg American Legion #109. He enjoyed bowling on several leagues, hunting rabbits, squirrels and the occasional pheasant. When his children were young he also enjoyed taking them fishing. An avid Penn State Football fan, he attended their bowl games whenever possible. He also enjoyed his favorite hockey team, the Hershey Bears.
A quiet and intelligent man, he enjoyed gardening and regularly did crossword puzzles. He was on old fashion dad who took care of his family.
Although, they didn’t have many worldly things, their needs were always met.
Tom is survived by two sons: Thomas B. Stewart Jr. , and his wife, Becky, Harrisburg and Terry R. Stewart, Mechanicsburg; one daughter: Cathy A. Rubin, Huntington, NY; one grandchild: Rebecca L. Watson , and her husband Erik, West Babalon, NY; and a longtime dear family friend:
Mrs. Ernest Burch of Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Betty L. (Horning) Stewart, who died August 12, 1999; a son:
Dale L. Stewart who died July 10, 1993; three brothers and one sister.
All are welcome to join Tom’s family at a Graveside Memorial Service on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11:00 in Mechanicsburg Cemetery, with a funeral celebrant officiating.
A Celebration of Life with food and fellowship will immediately follow at the Mechanicsburg Club.
