Thomas “Tommy” Joseph Johns

Loving husband, father & grandfather -

Thomas “Tommy” Joseph Johns, age 96, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Wilkes-Barre, passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, September 22, 2022.  Tom was born on Monday, April 19, 1926, in Wilkes-Barre to the late Thomas Fredrick Johns and Amelia Wilhelmina (Russ) Johns.  In addition to his parents, Tom is preceded in death by his son, Thomas Todd Johns.

Tom’s survivors include his wife of 70 years, Blanche Frances (Derwin) Johns; his two granddaughters: Nicole Johns of Mechanicsburg; Amanda Johns and her fiancé, Taylor, of Camp Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

Tom graduated from James M. Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre, obtained his associate’s degree from Harrisburg Area Community College, and proudly served in the United States Army.  He retired from the New Cumberland Army Depot, after many years of service working as a supply clerk; and from the Pennsylvania State Liquor Store.  Tom cherished the time that he had with his son.  They loved spending time with each other and enjoyed going golfing and fishing together.  Besides golf and fishing, Tom was also a football fan, with his favorite teams being Penn State and Notre Dame.  His favorite colors were maroon and gray and his favorite types of music were classical and band music; he loved listening to marching bands.  Tom was never one to turn down a good blueberry pie, either.  Family and friends were extremely important to him and he was loved by all.  A caring person, Tom didn’t have a mean bone in his body.  He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and he could never be replaced.  Tom will be deeply missed.

All are welcome to join Tom’s family at his viewing on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, from 10:45 a.m. until time of service at 11:45 a.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Pastor Robert V. Bishard, Jr. officiating.  Tom’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service.  Burial will follow the reception in St. John’s Cemetery in Mechanicsburg, where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard.

The family sends their most heartfelt thanks to Residential Hospice who so lovingly cared for Tom during his illness.
